Date : 16th October 2007 Title : Gee and Rach take National titles To cap off his best season to date Gee Atherton from Animal Commencal took the win at the final round of the National Downhill Series in Innerliethan, Scotland. His win secured the overall title in the series with three wins and a second. Sister Rachel also took the series overall, unfortuntley she couldn't finish the season on as big as a high, as a big mistake in her final run meant Tracey Mosely took the win up in Scotland. Gee's 3 second lead over 2nd place Mark Beaumont was the biggest winning margin of the year showing Gee will be the man to beat come the start of 2008. Dan capped off the Athertons amazing season with a 4th place overall in the series. This raced marked the end of the season for the Animal Commencal team who now embark on an off season littered with training days, photo shoots and the occasional holiday, keep your eyes peeled to www.animalcommencal.com for updates on the family. Date : 19th December 2007 Title : General Team Update Silver and bronze at the World Champs in Fort William would constitute a fantastic season for any team, yet for this team, it could have been so much more. Rachel unfortunately broke her arm in practice at the first round of the World Cup in Vigo, Spain which put her out of any meaningful competition until the Worlds. She came second in Scotland, but a week later at the final round of the World cup in Maribor, Slovenia she beat the second placed rider by 8 seconds! In the races she did manage to compete in, Rach was never out of the top 2! Gee on the Commençal showed once again he is the best all-round mountain biker in the World, finishing 4th in the DH World Cup, 3rd at the Worlds, 5th in the 4X World Cup and constantly being invited to ride in urban mountain bike events the world over. Again for Gee, it is a case of what could have been, if it were not for unlucky start positions at Champery and Mt St Anne in the heaviest rain, Gee would probably finished in the top 3 in DH. Sam Hill is proving to take some catching though, but Gee must be one of those most capable of doing it. Dan also showed what a skilled rider he is, 3rd place in the 4X at Maribor helped elevate him into the top 10 for the season. He too is always asked to take place in the urban events alongside brother Gee and finished 9th in Lisbon, 3rd in Paris and 4th at the Red Bull Down Metro event in Budapest. Dan’s 10th place was an awesome ride at Fort William. When Dan set off at the top of the hill, it was black with rain up there and the clouds were blowing by so fast it looked like a TV special effect. Matt Rushton : Madison
